Problem

Make conversation dynamics visible, from speaking time and balance to emotions, in a way that helps without distracting or judging.

  • Live feedback had to help during a real conversation, not distract from it
  • The emotional data afterwards had to be clear, not data-heavy, and never a contest over who “won”

Approach

Every decision traces back to evidence. Each step has an ID, and every insight and decision names the evidence it came from.

  1. S001

    Source

    Product brief

Show speaking time, balance and emotions on both sides.

  2. I001

    Insight

    Feedback must not judge

Live data can easily turn into a scoreboard.

  3. I002

    Insight

    Afterwards, keep it light

Emotional data shouldn’t feel like a report.

    From S001

  4. D001

    Decision

    A flower, not charts

It blooms when the talk goes well and falters with long monologues.

    From I001

  5. D002

    Decision

    A digital garden

Each conversation’s flower joins a garden that grows over time.

    From I002

  6. D003

    Decision

    Water drops and challenges

Rewards that bring people back, plus solo practice.

    From D002

Solution

I led the UX. A UI designer did the visuals.

During the conversation

The phone sits on the table between two people.

  • Live data: who speaks and for how long, balance, and emotions on both sides
  • A flower that blooms when the conversation goes well
  • It falters with long monologues or negative emotions

After the conversation

  • The flower is placed in a digital garden that grows lusher with more good conversations
  • Conversations earn water drops to water the garden
  • Challenges, such as practising expressing emotions, also usable solo

Eight screens from the app

Outcome

Launched, and awarded the Latvian National Design Award in 2020.
